New Jersey homeowner uses affordable plumbing solution to add basement half-bath adjacent to new, in-ground swimming pool

Dan Sansone successfully converts basement into a pool half-bath, using Saniflo’s Saniaccess 3, avoiding the costly headache of breaking through concrete or constructing a pool-house.

Problem

BRIELLE, NEW JERSEY — The Sansone family recently installed an in-ground pool to take advantage of the precious-few New Jersey summer months. The plan had always been to add a nearby bathroom option to prevent wet, young swimmers from entering the main house, which has smooth tiles that could easily cause an unfortunate accident.

According to owner Dan Sansone, the family home was damaged by SuperStorm Sandy in 2012. As a result, they had to rebuild the entire first floor. The home was originally built on a concrete block with a 2.5-foot crawl space underneath. Three years after the storm, the entire house had to be elevated an additional four feet, resulting in a very costly project.

“Our basement door is adjacent to the pool, and the sewer line is located near that entrance,” explains Sansone. “Adding the bathroom in the basement was a no-brainer.”The happy outcome? The Sansones ended up with a 6.5-foot basement and an ideal location for a half-bath.

Ideally, Sansone wanted to avoid expensive alternatives, such as a completely new pool house or installing below-floor conventional drainage. So he turned to a familiar plumbing solution to add a simple pool bathroom in the basement.

Solution

“Saniflo has been a client of our recruiting firm, The Sansone Group, for over six years,” says Sansone. “We have gotten to know their product quality and worldwide reputation as a leader in above-floor plumbing technology.”

“It was the best solution to avoid the costly headache of breaking through the basement’s concrete floor,” he continues. “In addition, the company’s toilets are very aesthetically pleasing.”

Saniflo recommended the Saniaccess 3: a half-horsepower macerator pump system designed for creating a full bath with three fixture connections. In addition to the toilet waste, the unit can also discharge gray water from two other sanitary fixtures, such as a sink, a bathtub, a shower, or even a urinal. Moreover, the unit can be positioned up to 15 feet below the sewer line or even 150 feet away from a soil stack.

For the Sansone half-bath, a sink feeds into a two-inch inlet on the right side of the macerator’s housing. With an outlet on top for creating a vent connection, the unit itself directly connects to Saniflo’s specially made, rear-discharge toilet.

Drainage from the two fixtures discharges from the Saniaccess 3 through a ¾-inch pipe running six feet before connecting to the existing sewer line near the basement entrance. “The Saniaccess 3 model we received was perfect for the application,” says Sansone.

Results

For the installation, Sansone hired a recommended local handyman skilled in plumbing, electrical, and HVAC trades.

“He had never installed a Saniflo system before, but said he found a great YouTube video that was useful and answered any questions that he had,” Sansone says.

The installation was completed in less than two days and, according to Sansone’s handyman, went exactly as expected.

The Sansones are pleased with the convenience of a bathroom close to their new swimming pool. “The Saniflo system has performed very well and allowed us to have a bathroom where we otherwise could not have afforded one.”
