Saniflo’s macerating technology, aids former Central Distribution Manager at major Northeast Wholesaler, overcomes bathroom addition challenge

Problem
PORTLAND, MAINE — Proud former supply house manager Greg Bodlovick counts himself lucky to have worked at one of the plumbing industry’s largest, multi-branch wholesalers. After 39 years of relentless hard work, he has converted a fiery passion for wholesaling into an equally passionate pursuit of various home-improvement projects with his wife, Simone Bodlovick. Living in a range-style home with only one bathroom, the Bodlovicks faced an undeniable inconvenience.

“Having only one bathroom, posed some problems for us, because for the longest time, we had Simone’s extended family staying with us intermittently. Although we loved the company, we all had to share one bathroom, with up to ten to twelve people visiting at times.”

“My mother is 86-years-old, and in the ‘high-risk group,’ as they put it. Especially with COVID in mind, we accepted that it is highly likely that someone in the family could get the virus. We might as well prepare, in case a family member would have to quarantine, ideally using a separate bathroom.”Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, having only one bathroom became an even bigger concern, so the couple decided to add a second bathroom in their basement. “The prompting of finally taking on the basement bathroom project was absolutely COVID-related,” says Bodlovick.

Thanks to Bodlovick’s experience working as a wholesale manager and buyer, he already knew of an easy, affordable way to add a bathroom without the cost and hassle of breaking through the basement floor to install drainage.

Solution
“Saniflo’s line of above-floor macerators and grinder pumps was a great product offering for us,” says Bodlovick of his former employer.

Based on Bodlovick’s industry experience, he says he values the quality and durability of Saniflo products. Consequently, Saniflo’s macerating technology was a no-brainer for his full-basement bathroom project.

Saniflo technical manager Jose Pachas worked with Bodlovick on the plumbing layout for his new bath. For the installation itself, Bodlovick hired a local remodeling contractor, APT Management.

Pachas recommended the Saniaccess 3: a half-horsepower macerator pump system, designed for creating a full bath. In addition to the toilet waste, the unit can also discharge gray water from two other sanitary fixtures, such as a sink, a bathtub, a shower, or even a urinal. The unit can be positioned up to 15 feet below the sewer line or even up to 150 feet away from a soil stack.

For the Bodlovick project, the new bathroom’s shower feeds into a 2-inch inlet on the right side of the macerator’s housing. The vanity sink feeds into another 2-inch inlet on the left side. With an outlet on top for creating a vent connection, the unit itself directly connects to Saniflo’s specially made, rear-discharge toilet.

Drainage from the three fixtures is jettisoned from the Saniaccess 3 through a 1-inch discharge pipe running eight feet vertically and six feet horizontally before connecting to the main sewage access pipe into which a washing machine also drains.

Results
Bodlovick says the cost savings that come with using Saniflo’s above-floor plumbing solution, rather than traditional plumbing, such as a sewage ejector, is a big selling point.

“For components alone — excluding labor — my costs would’ve been around the $800 mark.”

Pointing to what goes into a traditional basement bathroom project — jackhammering the floor, putting in a basin, installing a pumping system within the basin, etc. — Bodlovick says the cost-savings are undeniable.

“You’re looking at close to $5,000,” he says. “But the real savings comes down to the labor, not needing to jackhammer the floor. It’s relevant to the work, but with the Saniflo system versus traditional plumbing, you’re saving almost double the cost of labor.”

Bodlovick reports that, since its installation in early 2021, the Saniaccess 3 has not experienced any issues.

“I know, as a matter of fact from my own wholesaling experience, this product does not cause problems — from the moment you install it to years down the line.”
